Sarah Page Summar began her life in music with lessons in piano at age six and violin at age ten. Her earliest studies in music composition were with Dr. Michael Kurek at Vanderbilt University where she earned a Bachelor of Music in violin performance. She has since completed a Master of Music in composition from the University of Georgia and has worked in Tennessee and Texas as a composer, performer, and instructor of music. Ms. Summar currently resides in Denton, Texas, where she is working towards a DMA degree in composition at the University of North Texas. Her recent projects include works that require an organic interactivity between the performers and the environment in which they are performing. Such projects include Three Pieces on the Shapes of a Pair, a collaboration with choreographer Lily Sloan, and Two Ways, a structured improvisation for two percussionists guided by video projection. Other recent works such as Fred and Ginger and Quercus reflect the composer's attraction to irregular yet driving rhythms and a freely atonal lyricism. |
